Te Rauā is the name of the ancient forest that once covered the whenua where the Wairoa township now stands. It was known for its abundance of kai and was a food source for iwi and hapū of the rohe. The alarming rate at which the land was acquired and cleared for settlement weighed heavily upon our tūpuna.
The reclamation of the whenua situated at 45 Kitchener Street (or known to many as the old orange orchard) to house and improve the wellbeing of our people is one part of our journey to mana motuhake and providing houisng options for our whānau.
The plan includes a total of up to 56 housing units, including 30 whānau housing units (two to five bedrooms) all on separate lots. All whānau housing units will have direct street access and a garage or a car port.
At the heart of the development will be Tokotoko Pakeke Village. Tokotoko features one and two bedroom independent living units, for kaumātua singles and couples, and 12 studio units plus a flat within a supported living complex – all grouped around a shared open space area.
The name Tokotoko speaks to Ngā Tokotoko o Te Rangi a name given to describe the great trees within the forest of Tāne. These trees provide protection to allow smaller trees to grow and in time fall to be replaced by younger trees.
In the same manner our kaumātua and their knowledge are an important part of Te Rauā that strengthens our communitiy and allows whānau to grow.
As you can see in the plans the other 30 two-five bedroom units are located around the outside of Tokotoko across the remainder of the site.
Update – Where are we at right now
We have fantastic news; our Resource Consent application has been approved with minor conditions, so very soon you will start to see this exciting development start to take shape.
NB: We are not taking application for residency yet however we will let everyone know once we are.
Exciting times ahead for our whānau, hapū and township as we navigate one of the biggest housing projects in our community.
